Conversion pages: count conversions without a snippet

Conversion pages let Tapper count conversions without the conversion script. You list the pages that mean a customer converted, such as an order confirmation or a thank-you page, and Tapper counts a conversion when a visitor reaches one. The monitoring script already sees every page view, so nothing new goes on your site. Use it when nobody can add a tag to the confirmation page, or when your tag manager cannot fire a tag on that page alone.

Before you start

  • The monitoring script must be installed on your site, the confirmation pages included.
  • Only workspace Owners and Admins can add or change a conversion page.

Add a page

  1. In the sidebar, under Protection, click Protected Entities and open the entity.
  2. In the left rail, under Website, click Monitoring, and scroll to Conversion pages, under the conversion script.
  3. Click Add page.
  4. In Add conversion page, fill in Name: what the page means to you, for example "Order confirmation".
  5. Pick a Rule (see the table) and fill in the field below it: Address for an address rule, Text on the page for a text rule.
  6. Optionally, enter Value (optional), what one conversion on this page is worth, and Currency, a three-letter code such as USD. Give both or leave both empty.
  7. Leave Counts as a conversion signal on for a page that means success. Turn it off for a result that is not a success, such as declined or pending.
  8. Click Add page at the bottom of the dialog. The page appears in the list.

The Conversion pages section with one page listed and both switches

To change a page later, hover over its row: a pencil icon and a trash icon appear in the Actions column, which looks empty until then. Click the pencil to open Edit conversion page, change what you need and click Save. To remove a page, click the trash and confirm with Delete; conversions already recorded are kept.

RuleWhat it matches
Is exactlyThe address must be exactly this, and nothing else.
ContainsThe address contains this text anywhere in it.
Starts withThe address begins with this text.
Matches patternAdvanced: the address matches this regular expression.
Page text containsThe words on the page contain this text.
Element text containsThe words inside one part of the page contain this text. Use this when only one area shows the result.

For the address rules, enter the part of the address after your domain, such as /checkout/thank-you; upper and lower case do not matter. Anything after ? or # is ignored, so an order id or a campaign parameter in the address does not stop a page matching.

For the text rules, enter the words that appear only when a visitor has converted, such as your application has been approved. Upper and lower case and extra spaces do not matter. Make sure these words never appear on a page that is not a conversion. Element text contains also asks for Part of the page: the id or class of the area that shows the result, such as #status, which your developer can give you.

The two switches under the list

SwitchWhat it does
Count conversions only from these pagesConversions your site reports from anywhere else stop counting. It stays grayed out while the list is empty.
Check the words on the pageTapper reads the words visible in the visitor's browser. The words themselves are never sent to Tapper. Turn it on when you use a text rule: text rules count nothing while it is off, and it stays grayed out until the list has one.

How conversions are counted

  • One conversion per visitor, per page, per day. A customer who reloads the confirmation page ten times is counted once.
  • When more than one rule matches the same page, the most specific one counts.
  • Each row's Signal is a Yes or No dropdown. Owners and Admins change it right in the row and it saves as soon as they pick it. It is the same setting as Counts as a conversion signal in the dialog. Yes means "a visitor who reaches this page is treated as a real customer when we train our models and check traffic." Either way, the conversion is still counted in your numbers.

Conversion pages or the conversion script?

You can run both. Conversion pages give each page one fixed value, the one you set on the rule, so they suit conversions that are all worth roughly the same. The real value of each order, its currency and its order id come only from the conversion script. If your order values vary, use the script: see Install the conversion script: GTM, Shopify, PrestaShop or JavaScript.
