Invalid traffic types definitions

On this page

Tapper labels every piece of invalid traffic with a reason. The reasons appear in the dashboard's invalid traffic breakdown, on the Clicks and Exclusions pages and in your reports. One visitor often triggers several types, so reason counts across a period usually add up to more than the number of visitors blocked.

Click behavior

  • Suspicious ad click: the protection script loaded, but the visitor did nothing on the page.
  • Aborted ad click: ad clicks registered, but your page never loaded and no events were recorded.
  • Ad click limit exceeded: more clicks from one IP than your click limit allows.
  • Suspicious click behavior: movement, scrolling and click timing that match bots and click farms.
  • Repeat suspicious clicks: the same visitor keeps coming back through your paid ads and never converts, the pattern click farms, competitors and paid clickers leave.
  • Instant bounce: very short visits with no interaction.

Source and reputation

  • Known threat: IPs that threat intelligence blocklists list as sources of attacks or abuse, such as spam, scanning, botnets, brute force logins or exploits.
  • Data center: traffic from hosting providers, linked to bots and scrapers.
  • Suspicious network: networks whose ownership or history is associated with invalid traffic.

Hidden origin

  • Location mismatch: the click's IP address is in a country your country rule excludes.
  • VPN: traffic routed through a VPN.
  • Tor: traffic from the Tor anonymity network.

Automation and device

  • Bot: traffic from bots, malware or automated scripts.
  • Tampered device: the device's fingerprint contradicts itself, a sign of emulators and spoofing tools.
