Meta ads and the learning phase after you turn protection on
On this page
Switching protection on for a Meta ad set may put it back into Meta's learning phase for a while. It happens once, not each time Tapper finds new invalid traffic.
What is the learning phase?
It is the period when Meta's delivery system works out how best to deliver an ad set, trying different audiences, placements and other factors. Results vary more than usual. Meta says an ad set usually leaves learning after about 50 optimization events within 7 days. See Meta's About the learning phase.
Why did my ad set enter learning?
Turning protection on, with the Protection switch or Protect all, adds Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience to the ad set as an exclusion. That changes its targeting, so Meta may send its ads for review, and some ad sets re-enter learning. Meta says most ads are reviewed within 24 hours; see About ads in review.
Only ad sets you switch on are affected. Connecting a Meta account changes no ad set.
Will new invalid traffic send it back into learning?
No. Tapper edits the ad set once. After that, flagged people join the same audience and the ad set keeps excluding it, so new detections do not restart learning or trigger another review.
Two things do change the ad set again:
- switching its protection off and on, which removes the exclusion and adds it back;
- putting every rule set of the entity, including the default, in Monitor-only, which removes the Meta exclusions Tapper added (see Switch blocking on or off: what changes in your ad accounts).
Will protection affect performance?
Your ad set stops reaching people Tapper flagged as invalid, and Meta optimizes on the people who remain. Expect some variation while it relearns. The exclusion applies wherever the ad set delivers (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Audience Network), so Meta may shift how much budget goes to each placement. For how much protection helps and where to measure it, see How Block protects Meta ads.
What if an ad set is stuck in learning?
Follow Meta's guidance:
- consolidate ad sets instead of running many small ones with many ads;
- avoid frequent edits, including switching Tapper protection off and on;
- set budgets that can produce about 50 optimization events a week.
