Mobile app rule sets
On this page
A mobile app rule set tells Tapper what counts as invalid traffic in the installs and events your tracking tool sends: how many ad clicks one device may make, which click-to-install times look wrong, and which countries are allowed. It is the mobile counterpart of a website rule set.
Before you start
- A workspace with Block.
- A mobile app connected to the entity. Until then, the Mobile apps group of Rule sets shows only Connect a mobile app. See Connect a mobile app through your tracking tool.
- The Owner, Admin or Manager role to change rules.
Open a set
- Pick the entity in the sidebar switcher if you have more than one.
- Under Setup, click Rule sets.
- Pick a set under Mobile apps. Its tabs are Click limits, Install time, Countries, Monitor-only and Applies to.
Rule sets and Applies to
Every setting belongs to the set you picked. The default set applies where no other set is linked; its Applies to reads "Events from these apps, when no other set covers them." Most apps need only the default. To give one app different rules:
- Click New rule set, type a name and create it.
- Open its Applies to tab. Until linked, it reads Not applied to anything yet.
- Use Choose apps (also in the set's ⋮ menu), pick one or more apps and save.
What each tab checks
| Tab | What it does | How it saves |
|---|---|---|
| Click limits | Flags a device that makes too many ad clicks in a time window | Save in the Unsaved changes bar |
| Install time | Flags installs whose click-to-install time is too short or too long | As you change it |
| Countries | Flags installs and events from listed countries, or from every country but the listed ones | As you change it |
| Monitor-only | Records what Tapper detects for the apps this set judges | As you change it |
Click limits
Each limit reads Flag after a number of clicks within a time window, for example 3 clicks within 10 minutes. The count is per device, not per IP address as on websites. You can add as many as your plan allows.
- Click Add limit, type the click count and window, and pick the unit.
- To remove a limit, click its trash icon.
- Click Save in the bar at the bottom. Tapper asks before you leave with unsaved changes.
Install time
A click-to-install time too short for a real person to download and open the app is a common sign of click injection. A very long one can mean an earlier click claimed an install it did not cause. Fill in one or both rows: Flag installs faster than [N] seconds after the click and Flag installs slower than [N] seconds after the click.
Countries
Turn on Block by country, choose Block these countries or Only allow these countries, and add countries.
Monitor-only
One switch. When on, Tapper records what it detects for the apps this set judges. It applies to the selected set only, so check it on each set.
What happens next
The dashboard's Mobile tab reports your app's installs and events, including Untrusted installs. See The Mobile dashboard tab: installs, sessions and tracking tool metrics. If it stays empty, set your tracking tool to send all events to Tapper, not only attributed ones; Connect a mobile app through your tracking tool shows the setting for each MMP.
