Tracking links that carry an ad click into your app through your tracking tool

On this page

Some ad networks (affiliate, incentivized, OEM or DSP) give you a click URL field for each campaign. For those, Setup > Mobile app > Click tracking builds a link that sends each click through Tapper and on to your tracking tool, so Tapper records the click before the tool attributes the install.

Use a tracking link only when a network asks for a click URL for an app-install campaign. For Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, Microsoft Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Snapchat Ads and Apple Ads, use your tracking tool's own integration. Tracking links are not for deep-link or re-engagement links. How this works opens Tapper's public guide, Mobile App Protection, in a new tab.

How it works

  1. Someone clicks your ad, and the network sends the click to your Tapper link, filling in your macros (campaign, ad, device advertising ID and so on).
  2. Tapper records the click: IP address, device and the link's parameters.
  3. Tapper redirects to your tracking tool's click URL, which takes the person to the app store.
  4. When the tool attributes an install or event, it sends it to Tapper's callback address for the app, and Tapper matches it to the click.

Before you start

  • A workspace with Block, and the Owner, Admin or Manager role.
  • An app connected to the entity; without one, the page asks you to connect it first. See Connect a mobile app through your tracking tool. The apps, with their keys, Fraud blocking and Counting (Lift), are managed there too, under Setup > Mobile app.
  • Your tracking tool's click URL for the campaign, starting with https://.
  1. Pick the entity in the sidebar switcher if you have more than one. Under Setup, click Mobile app, then Click tracking.
  2. Pick the Network type: Other network (affiliate / incent / OEM / DSP click URL) (starts empty) or Bidease (DSP) (pre-fills its parameters).
  3. Optionally pick the Tracking tool the link reports through.
  4. Under Parameters, click a field under Supported fields to add it as a row, or Add parameter for an empty row. Type the Parameter name and, under Value or macro, your network's macro. Names use lowercase letters, digits and underscores (1 to 64 characters).
  5. In Destination URL, paste your tracking tool's click URL, for example https://app.adjust.com/abc123.
  6. Type a Link name, then click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

idfa and gaid are not in web tracking links, and no network type pre-fills them. Ask your network for the exact macro for each. Check pre-filled macros against your network's documentation too.

Tapper previews the link above the saved links. The preview and the copy button work only once the link is saved.

Saved tracking links lists each link's Name, URL and Created date, with a Search tracking links box. Each row can be copied, edited or deleted. Paste the copied URL into your network's click URL field.

A link with Legacy - network no longer supported still works; rebuild it as Other network when you can. Other Legacy chips mark a value no longer accepted: that link cannot be edited, so copy or delete it and build a replacement.

If something goes wrong

  • "Destination must start with https://." Copy the https:// version of the click URL from your tracking tool. Save stays disabled until it is valid.
  • "The link preview isn't available right now" Saved links still work. If you need a new link's URL before the preview is back, email support@tapper.ai.
  • The app shows no events. Most tracking tools send a partner only events attributed to it. Set yours to send all events to Tapper; Connect a mobile app through your tracking tool names the setting for each MMP.
