Before you connect Meta: permissions, the pixel and the Custom Audience terms
To connect Meta Ads with Block, you need four things: a Facebook profile with Advertiser or Admin access to the ad account, permission to manage your ads granted when you sign in, a Meta pixel on the ad account, and Meta's Custom Audience terms accepted for that ad account. You do not need to own a Facebook Page.
These requirements exist because, with Block, Tapper creates a custom audience called Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience in each ad account and excludes it from the ad sets you protect. On a Lift-only workspace Tapper creates no audience, so the pixel and the terms do not apply there.
What to check before you connect
1. Advertiser or Admin access to the ad account
Sign in with a Facebook profile that can manage campaigns on the ad account, not only view it. In Meta Business settings, open Accounts, then Ad accounts, then People, and check that your profile has Manage campaigns or Manage ad account access. A profile with view-only (Analyst) access is refused, because creating an audience needs Advertiser or Admin access. If your profile lacks it, ask an admin of the ad account to give it to you, or let someone who has it connect the account.
2. Permission to manage your ads
When Meta asks what Tapper may do, allow everything, in particular managing your ads. Without that permission Tapper cannot create or attach its audience.
3. A Meta pixel on the ad account
The ad account needs a Meta pixel before you connect. Without one, Tapper cannot create its audience and the account does not connect.
4. Meta's Custom Audience terms
Meta asks you to accept its terms for website Custom Audiences once per ad account. In Tapper, ticking an account on the account list shows the link Accept the terms on Meta, which opens the terms for that ad account. You can also accept them in Meta Ads Manager: open Audiences for the ad account, choose Create audience, then Custom audience, then Website, and accept the terms Meta shows.
What Facebook asks for at sign-in
| Permission | What it covers |
|---|---|
email | Your email address |
ads_read | Reading your ad accounts and their spend |
ads_management | Managing your ads, which Tapper needs to create its audience and attach it to ad sets |
business_management | The business portfolios and the ad accounts they own |
pages_show_list | The list of Pages you manage |
pages_read_engagement | Your Pages' content and engagement |
Tapper uses this access to list your ad accounts, read their spend and, with Block, create the Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience and attach it to or remove it from each ad set you switch on or off. For every platform, see What access Tapper asks for on each platform and what it does with it.
Messages you may see
| What Tapper shows | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Tapper was not given permission to manage your ads when Meta was connected, ... Reconnect Meta and allow ads management when Meta asks. If Meta does not ask, first remove Tapper in your Facebook settings under Business integrations, then reconnect Meta." | Reconnect Meta and allow ads management. If Meta does not ask again, open your Facebook settings, go to Business integrations, remove Tapper, then reconnect Meta in Tapper. |
| A message saying your Facebook profile can only view the ad account (Analyst access) or has no advertising access to it, with "Tapper creates an audience there, which needs Advertiser or Admin access." | Ask an admin of the ad account to give your profile Manage campaigns or Manage ad account access in Meta Business settings (Accounts, Ad accounts, People), or reconnect Meta with a profile that already has it. |
| A message saying Meta's terms for website Custom Audiences have not been accepted for the ad account | Accept the terms (step 4 above), then connect the account again. |
| "Tapper couldn't finish connecting this account. Try again; if it fails twice, contact support." | A likely cause is that the ad account has no Meta pixel. Add one, check the terms, then retry. If it fails twice, write to support@tapper.ai. |
| On a connected account card: The connected Facebook profile lost access, "Reconnect Meta with a profile that has Advertiser or Admin access to this account." (chip Needs reconnect) | Restore your profile's access in Meta, or reconnect with a profile that has Advertiser or Admin access. |
| On a connected account card: Meta can't reach this ad account, "It may be closed or your Facebook profile lost access; check it in Meta Business settings, then reconnect Meta." (chip Needs attention) | Check the ad account in Meta Business settings, reactivate it or restore your access, then reconnect Meta. |
How to reconnect is in Reconnect an ad account that stopped working. Every Meta connection failure is in Meta Ads account could not be connected.
