Meta ads and the learning phase after you turn protection on
When you switch Tapper's protection on for a Meta ad set, Meta may put that ad set back into its learning phase for a while. That comes from the one change Tapper makes to the ad set's targeting, and it does not repeat each time Tapper finds new invalid traffic.
What is the learning phase?
The learning phase is the period when Meta's delivery system is still working out how best to deliver an ad set. It tries different audiences, placements and other factors, so results can vary more than usual. Meta says an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 optimization events within 7 days. Meta's own explanation is in About the learning phase.
Why did my ad set enter the learning phase after I turned protection on?
Turning protection on for an ad set, with its Protection switch or with Protect all, adds Tapper's audience, Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience, to that ad set as an exclusion. That changes the ad set's targeting, so Meta may send its ads for review and some ad sets re-enter learning while Meta recalibrates delivery. Meta says most ads are reviewed within 24 hours; see About ads in review.
Only the ad sets you switch on are affected. Connecting a Meta account to Tapper does not change any ad set.
Will new invalid traffic send my ad sets back into learning?
No. Tapper edits an ad set's targeting once, when you switch its protection on. After that, the people Tapper flags join the same audience, and the ad set keeps excluding that same audience. The ad set itself does not change, so new detections do not restart learning or send the ads for another review.
Two things do change the ad set again:
- switching its protection off and on, which removes the exclusion and adds it back;
- returning the entity to Monitoring-only mode (every rule set, including the default, with the switch on), which removes the Meta exclusions Tapper added (see Switch blocking on or off: what changes in your ad accounts).
Will protection affect my campaign performance?
Protection stops your ad set from being shown to people Tapper has flagged as invalid: automated traffic, bots, click farms and similar sources. Meta's delivery system then optimizes on the people who remain. Expect some variation while an ad set relearns. How much protection helps depends on how much invalid traffic your Meta ads attract; How Block protects Meta ads explains the effect and where to measure it.
Why did delivery across placements change?
Meta delivers an ad set across its placements, such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. The exclusion applies to the ad set wherever it delivers. As Meta's delivery adjusts, it may shift how much of the ad set's budget goes to each placement.
What should I do if an ad set is stuck in learning?
Follow Meta's best practices for the learning phase:
- consolidate ad sets instead of running many small ones with a high number of ads;
- avoid frequent edits, including switching Tapper protection off and on;
- set budgets that can realistically produce about 50 optimization events a week for the ad set.
Meta's full guidance is in About the learning phase.
